Extra funding for out-of-school childcare

Communities and Tackling Poverty Minister, Lesley Griffiths, has yesterday announced £400,000 to provide out-of-school childcare for families across Wales.

The funding, which is in addition to £2.3 million already provided by the Welsh Government, will help address existing gaps in childcare provision across Wales.

Projects set to receive additional funding include childcare centres in Caerphilly and Conwy which will provide innovative play workshops for local children.

The funding will also provide training for staff and specialist childcare places in settings which care for children with autistic spectrum disorder in Pembrokeshire.

Yesterday’s funding will also deliver weekend and wrap around childcare for children attending a new nursery in Wrexham town centre and fund kids clubs in Cardiff.

Announcing the funding, Lesley Griffiths said yesterday:

“Providing quality childcare and improving parents’ access to it is one of my top priorities.  Childcare facilities are not just simply a place to go while parents are at work, they are also about improving the lives of children, especially those from our deprived communities.

“Childcare not only plays a central role in improving  children’s well-being and reducing inequalities, it is also vital to ensuring parents are able to access employment and training opportunities.

“This is why I am delighted to announce additional funding today which will provide many more children across Wales with a place to play and learn.”
