FCO Minister condemns South Sudan decision to expel UN diplomat

Minister for Africa condemns South Sudan’s decision to expel UN humanitarian official.

Minister for Africa, James Duddridge said:

I condemn the deeply regrettable decision taken by the government of South Sudan to expel the UN Nations Deputy Special Representative in South Sudan, Toby Lanzer. Such a move is particularly concerning given the desperate humanitarian situation facing the country. 1.5 million people are internally displaced and 4.6 million face severe food insecurity – people Mr Lanzer has worked tirelessly to support on a daily basis.

I join other international partners in calling for the government of South Sudan to immediately reverse this decision and allow Mr Lanzer to finish his tour as planned next month. I also impress upon them the importance of achieving peace, and the need to face up to the numerous and deep humanitarian challenges that the country faces.
