FCO Minister welcomes news of Fijian election

Hugo Swire welcomes announcement that an election will take place in Fiji on 17 September 2014.

Foreign Office Minister Hugo Swire said:

I welcome the publication of the Electoral Decree and the announcement of a date for the election in Fiji. We are continuing to see concrete steps towards the restoration of democracy. I note the appointment of an Electoral Supervisor and hope that he, working closely with the independent Electoral Commission, can help to ensure a transparent and inclusive election process.

Independent international observers will be crucial in determining the overall credibility of the election process. I note that Australia has been asked to take a lead in establishing an election observation mission. We welcome this and look forward to supporting them in any way we can.
