Farmers pay day

Spring payment for Scottish beef farmers expected today.

Rural Affairs Secretary Richard Lochhead confirmed that around 7,600 Scottish farmers will receive their Scottish Beef Scheme (SBS) payments today (Wednesday, 15 April).

Eligible producers who applied for the SBS before the Hogmanay deadline last year will get a share of the £20.9 million pot. This is the last year of the current SBS – all animals born on or after December 2 2014 can only be claimed under the new 2015 beef scheme, with payment for that due next year.

Mr Lochhead said:

“I’m delighted that farmers will be getting their payments on time again. Scotch Beef is a prime product that is in demand all over the world – and last year was voted the nation’s favourite food and drink product. The Scottish Beef Scheme is aimed at supporting this dynamic sector.

“This support is vital for farmers, but with every £1 of output from the agricultural sector generating an additional 80p in other parts of the Scottish economy, the £20.9 million paid out today is clearly a welcome boost for all of Scotland. The Scottish Government has a good track record in meeting its payment deadlines and I am pleased to say that has continued for this year’s scheme.”

Notes To Editors

More than one hundred more producers will receive their payments than the same period last year (7,472 for 2013, 7,603 for 2014).

The total payout is £20,963,00. This is a slight decrease on last year due to a difference in the exchange rate (€ / £) and the Cabinet Secretary’s decision to transfer 9.5 per cent of the CAP Pillar 1 budget into Pillar 2.

Animal numbers in 2014 have increased from the same period in 2013 – 410,761 as opposed to 405,283.
