Fergusons’ Shipbuilders Task Force meeting

Speaking after the final Fergusons’ Shipbuilders Task Force meeting Finance Secretary John Swinney and Inverclyde Council leader Councillor Stephen McCabe said:

“Today was the final meeting of the Fergusons' task force. The task force started just a month ago when the company went into administration. We are now in a position of having a new buyer, the workforce re-hired and plans in place to expand the business. All of this achieved within a month.

“That is a tremendous turnaround time and all of the individuals and agencies involved in this process are to be congratulated for their hard work and commitment. None more so than the workers and the union representatives. They have taken a wholly constructive role and have shown a great deal of patience during a very difficult period.

“The view of the task force from day one was not one of doom and gloom but of real and genuine optimism. The close partnership working shown on this task force is a model of how we can deal with future similar situations. With a clear commitment to support the workforce and ambition to deliver for the industry and community, a long term solution can be found.

“With Clyde Blowers on board there is a clear way forward to deliver and grow the new Ferguson Marine Engineering and it is now the role of the Scottish Government, its agencies and Inverclyde Council to support those efforts where we can
