Final Celebrate awards leave games legacy for Scottish communities

Public celebration at Custom House Quay on Sunday 3 August

It brought together communities from across Scotland to celebrate the Commonwealth Games and to create a 2014 legacy from National Lottery funding. Now one year – £4.5 million, 646 community groups and over 1,000 vibrant arts, sports, heritage and community events later – the Celebrate fund has made its final awards.

84 groups yesterday (Tuesday 29 July) sharing in £484,843 of Celebrate funding. These final awards will enable groups to hold a range of Commonwealth themed events from community parades and festivals to drama and music performances right through until next year as Commonwealth Games fever continues to grip the nation. See full list of final Celebrate awards announced here.

Big Lottery Fund Scotland Chair, Maureen McGinn said: “Since its launch back in April of last year, the Celebrate fund has awarded over £4.5 million to 646 groups from across Scotland. From community concerts and baton relay events, to arts installations and Commonwealth themed heritage projects, Celebrate has supported activities in almost every part of the country. To recognise these special community contributions to the Commonwealth Games legacy, we invite the public to join us on Sunday 3 August at Custom House Quay to enjoy an afternoon of unique dance, drama and art performances. This is a fitting end to a very popular funding programme which has brought communities together to celebrate the Games in their own unique way.”

Some of the final projects receiving grants from the Celebrate programme include Fire in Babylon who will use their grant of £6,540 to host, on 30 August, a Commonwealth food village and market in Queen’s Park Arena, followed by an evening of music at Rum Shack with many artists who have Commonwealth heritage.

A grant of £2,147 goes to Cheviot Locality Youth Work Services in Jedburgh who will celebrate the culinary heritage of Commonwealth nations with a series of cookery sessions for young people. The courses will run for six weeks between October and December and culminate in a celebratory intergenerational event.

The National Youth Theatre of Great Britain has been awarded a grant of £9,109 to run a year of free weekly drama workshops for young people, aged 14 to 25, from Easterhouse. Workshops start in September 2014 with a final production taking place in summer 2015.

The Celebrate event, at Custom House Quay on the banks of the Clyde, will take place between 12.00pm and 5.00pm on Sunday 3 August. On the final day of the Commonwealth Games, the public can enjoy a range of Celebrate funded acts including choirs, Teiko drummers, Bollywood dancers and a Commonwealth themed fashion show.

Celebrate was developed by the Scottish Lottery Distributors Forum (SLDF) which is made up of all four Scottish Lottery Distributors, Big Lottery Fund, Creative Scotland, Heritage Lottery Fund and sportscotland.
