Finding more effective solutions to control animal infectious diseases

On 23-24 March, a seminar entitled “Biosafety – fundament for animal health” will take place in Riga, at the National Library of Latvia. The seminar will consider the most successful solutions for controlling animal infectious diseases. It is organised by the Ministry of Agriculture in cooperation with the European Commission’s TAIEX (Technical Assistance and Information Exchange Instrument) as one of the events under the Latvian Presidency of the EU Council.

The seminar will bring together experts and specialists from the European Union (EU) Member States, the candidate countries (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Turkey) and third countries bordering the EU (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine).

At the seminar, participants will share their experience and opinions on the most appropriate preventive measures designed to reduce the risk of transmission of animal diseases within a group. On 23 March, the experts will address the biosafety requirements laid down in EU legislation and the role of biosafety in preventing the spread of animal infectious diseases. Information will be provided on the implementation of biosafety requirements in the EU Member States. Representatives from the third countries will also share their experience in biosafety matters.

On 24 March, three working groups will discuss biosafety measures relating to topical animal infectious diseases in the EU Member States: foot-and-mouth disease (cattle, sheep and goats), African swine fever (pigs), and highly pathogenic avian influenza (poultry).

The seminar will be broadcast live on the websites of the Latvian Presidency and the Ministry of Agriculture.

Media representatives are welcome to take part in the second day of the seminar on 24 March. For more information, please see the media programme.

Please note that only accredited media will be allowed to enter the venue. Accreditation form is available on the Presidency website. Please send any questions regarding accreditation to: mediaaccreditation@es2015.lv.
