Firearms and ammunition seized from Birmingham property

Two men have been charged with firearms offences after they were arrested on suspicion of importing illegal firearms and explosives into the UK.

Umair Khan (29) from Caldwell Road, Bordesley, Birmingham was arrested by officers from the joint National Crime Agency and Metropolitan Police Organised Crime Partnership (OCP) on Monday 20 February. Nazim Hussain (46) from Bromford Lane, West Bromwich was arrested the following day at Perry Barr Police Station.

Working in conjunction with West Midlands Police, the West Midlands Regional Organised Crime Unit (ROCU) and the NCA’s Armed Operations Unit, a number of house searches were conducted and five revolvers, one handgun and an adapted shotgun were seized, as well as a large quantity of ammunition and counting machines.

Both men were charged with conspiracy to import a section 5 firearm, with Hussain charged with an additional eight offences of possession of firearms without a licence.

They have been remanded in custody and will appear at Birmingham Crown Court on 22 March 2017.

Two other individuals – one man and one woman – were also arrested and bailed pending further enquiries.

Spencer Barnett from the Organised Crime Partnership said:

“Illegal firearms are a national priority threat for UK law enforcement and the risk posed by the criminal use of firearms remains high in the UK.

“The close working relationship we have with our partners has allowed us to share information and disrupt individuals suspected of trying to import and distribute illegal weapons across the UK.
