Foreign Office statement on Anfal Memorial Day
On the occasion of Anfal Memorial Day the Foreign Office remembers those who lost their lives
A Foreign office Spokesperson said:
“Today marks the anniversary of the Anfal – Saddam Hussein’s brutal military campaign against the Kurdish people in Iraq. Tens of thousands of innocent Iraqis were slaughtered as part of the Anfal. Thousands more were injured, maimed and expelled from their homes and have to live with the lasting impact of the chemical weapons used by Saddam’s forces on both the population and environment.
“Today is a day to honour those who were killed or injured as a result of the Anfal. Our thoughts are with those who are mourning the loss of loved ones.
“As Minister for the Middle East, Tobias Ellwood, said on the anniversary of the chemical weapons attack on the town of Halabja last month, “The Halabja attack and the Anfal Campaign were crimes of monstrous proportions, made even more heinous by the use of chemical weapons. Crimes like this must never happen again.”
