Foreign Secretary welcomes new UN Syria envoy

William Hague welcomes de Mistura as UN Syria envoy; says UN efforts on a political solution are more pressing than ever.

Speaking about the appointment of a new UN Special Representative on Syria as successor to Lakhdar Brahimi, Foreign Secretary William Hague said:

I welcome the UN Secretary General’s appointment of Staffan de Mistura as the new UN Special Representative on Syria. The worsening conflict has already led to hundreds of thousands of deaths, left millions in need and displaced from their homes, and has created space for extremism to spread through the region and beyond.

His appointment comes at a time when the need for a political settlement in Syria has never been more pressing. Political transition by mutual agreement of the Syrian parties, supported by the international community, remains the only way to bring about sustainable peace in Syria. The new UN Special Representative has our strong support in these efforts.
