Fourth arrest in international drug smuggling investigation

A man from Chorlton in Manchester has been arrested in connection with an alleged plot to smuggle class A and B drugs into the UK.

The 28-year-old was detained on suspicion of conspiring to supply cocaine and cannabis by officers from the National Crime Agency on Tuesday 12 January in the Manchester area.

The investigation follows the attempted importation of around 10 kilos of cocaine and 10 kilos of cannabis in August 2014.

The drugs, with a potential street value of around £1.3 million, were found by customs officers in Germany in boxes to be shipped to the UK.

Three men aged 19, 29 and 38 were arrested by the NCA in August 2014 as they attempted to take delivery of the boxes at an address in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.

Paul Tallentire, from the NCA’s Border Policing Command, said:

“These arrests form part of an ongoing international investigation into the attempted importation of a substantial amount of controlled drugs.

“I am sure that had this consignment not been intercepted it would have ended up being sold on British streets.

“Working with law enforcement partners in the UK and abroad the NCA is determined to arrest and disrupt the organised criminal groups involved in drug trafficking.”

All four of those arrested have been bailed pending further enquiries.
