Games legacy goes on

£250,000 to boost physical activity in communities

A dozen community groups are to benefit from more than £250,000 to help encourage physical activity in communities across Scotland.

The money is part of the £1 million Legacy 2014 Sustainable Sport for Communities Fund, a partnership between the Scottish Government and The Robertson Trust. The fund is designed to support sport-related social enterprises, enabling them to become sustainable in the long run and help people become more physically active.

Jamie Hepburn, Minister for Sport, Health Improvement and Mental Health, will visit one of the successful applicants in Callander, Stirlingshire, today. Fabb, a national youth organisation working mainly with disabled young people, have secured a grant of almost £25,000 to take develop the Trossachs Tryst, into a residential outdoor facility.

Jamie Hepburn, said:

“I’d like to congratulate Fabb, and all the other organisations on their awards today. Small organisations like this are doing tremendous work to encourage more Scots to be more active, more often.

“Almost a year after Glasgow hosted the best Games ever, it’s important that Scotland continues to benefit from their legacy, and this fund is a key part of those efforts.

“The Sustainable Sport for Communities Fund is there to offer help to social enterprises and to allow them to ensure their long term sustainability. I look forward to seeing the positive impact the Fund will make.”

Robertson Trust Director, Kenneth Ferguson said:

“Sport can provide a range of positive benefits for individuals and communities. We are delighted to be able to use this Legacy 2014 programme to support organisations across Scotland which are working to enhance the lives of the people they work with through sport” .

“We are delighted to have been selected to receive funding from the Legacy 2014: Sustainable Sports for Communities Fund which will enable us to take ownership and develop a unique facility in the heart of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. We are very excited at the prospect of developing a successful and sustainable sport social enterprise that will benefit the local community, our community of interest and create a legacy for young people for years to come.”

Alastair Davis, Chief Executive of Social Investment Scotland which administers the fund, said:

“Each of the organisations receiving funding today has the potential to promote social inclusion and cohesion in their communities and across Scotland through sport. They have also each presented a compelling business case for how their plans can help them become financially sustainable, ensuring this fund can leave a legacy of community benefit for years to come.”

Ian Rideout, Chief Executive of Outfit Moray, who received an award in a previous funding round, said:

“We are really pleased with progress following the award of Legacy 2014 funding. The feasibility study we are working on will be completed on target thanks in whole to the funding enabling us to not only commission professional help but to also create the space for our team to be actively involved.
