‘Girls Make a Difference’: Minister encourages girls to make their voice heard

The Minister for Communities and Tackling Poverty, Lesley Griffiths, whose portfolio includes responsibility for equality, will speak of her determination to ensure more women are in decision making roles and in public life at an event in Cardiff today.

Addressing over 100 Year 12 girls at the Welsh Government’s ‘Girls Make a Difference’ conference, the Minister will set out her commitment to use every opportunity to encourage women and girls to make their voice heard.

The event aims to help raise aspirations and demonstrate careers in less traditional roles, such as science, engineering and as decision-makers in public service, are accessible to all.

Other key note speakers include Professor Laura McAllister, Chair of Sport Wales, Jessica Leigh Jones, Young Engineer of the Year 2012, and Olympian Sarah Thomas. There will also be an opportunity for the girls to meet with successful women from various sectors, to get advice and guidance from these role models on how to make it to the top.

Speaking ahead of the event, Lesley Griffiths said:

"There are still far too few women in prominent roles across public life. Women’s voices need to be heard and decision-making bodies, such as Government and Local Authorities, must be representative of the communities they serve.

"The Welsh Government is committed to tackling this imbalance. As Minister for Communities and Tackling Poverty, I am pleased to have responsibility for equality and I am determined to ensure we live in a society where we see more women in less traditional roles."

The Minister continued:

"Events such as today’s ‘Girls Make a Difference’ conference are a fantastic opportunity for girls to meet some of the inspiring role models we have in Wales. These women are actively engaging in public life and in our democratic processes. I am sure they, like me, have found it to be a hugely rewarding career path which helps to make a genuine and positive contribution to Welsh society.

"I encourage all girls and women to make sure their voices are heard
