Grant to establish a National Entity for Welsh for Adults announced

Organisations interested in taking on the role of a new National Entity for the Welsh for Adults programme are being encouraged to apply for a 7-year grant.

The establishment of a National Entity, which will be responsible for the strategic direction of Welsh for Adults at a national level, was one of the principal recommendations of the Review of Welsh for Adults.  The Review Group published their report ‘Raising our Sights:  Review of Welsh for Adults’ in July 2013, with the First Minister and Minister for Education and Skills accepting the majority of the recommendations in full.

The new National Entity’s responsibilities include:

  • To be a visible organisation that sets the national strategic direction for Welsh for Adults;
  • To provide leadership to the Welsh for Adults providers;
  • To raise standards in the teaching and learning of Welsh for Adults; and
  • To develop a high quality, engaging and appropriate national curriculum and produce resources suitable for all kinds of leaners.

First Minister Carwyn Jones said recently:

“We are committed to seeing the Welsh language thrive in Wales, giving people the opportunity to learn Welsh and encouraging people to use the language in their day to day lives.  The Welsh for Adults programme plays a key role in increasing the number of people able to speak and use the language.

“Following the recent review of Welsh for Adults, we accepted the key recommendations and the setting up of the National Entity is an important milestone.  The National Entity will set the strategic direction for the Welsh for Adults programme through to 2022 and I’m pleased to be able to today announce this initial grant to establish it.”

Education Minister Huw Lewis added:

“We are committed to supporting and promoting the use of the Welsh language. Everyone, regardless of age or where they live, should be given the opportunity to develop their language skills and enrich their experience of living in a bilingual country.

“The development of the National Entity and the Welsh for Adults programme are important steps in helping us achieve this aim and demonstrates our commitment to Welsh language learning.

Approximately £780,000 is being made available for the new National Entity between 1 April 2015 and 31 July 2016.  Organisations can submit applications for the grant until 25 February 2015.
