Scotland’s Chief Statistician yesterday released Gross Expenditure on Research and Development (GERD) Scotland 2014.

The main findings are:

Scottish GERD was £2,222 million in 2014. In real terms this represents a decrease of £13 million or 0.6 per cent since 2013.

Between 2013 and 2014, the gap in GERD as a percentage of GDP between Scotland and the EU widened, increasing from 0.32 to 0.38 percentage points.

The GERD figures for Scotland break down as follows:

• Business Enterprise R&D expenditure was £905 million in 2014, a decrease of 0.7 per cent (£6 million) in real terms between 2013 and 2014.
• Higher Education R&D (HERD) expenditure was £1,057 million in 2014, the same in real terms as 2013. Scottish HERD spend accounted for 13.4 per cent of the UK figure.
• Government R&D expenditure was £252 million in 2014, a decrease of 3.1 per cent (£8 million) in real terms between 2013 and 2014.
• Private Non-Profit (PNP) expenditure in Scotland was £8 million in 2014, the same in real terms as 2013.

The figures released yesterday were produced in accordance with professional standards set out in the Code of Practice for Official Statistics.
