Gunman convicted of shooting at NCA officer

A man who opened fire at a north London pool hall before turning his gun on officers from the National Crime Agency has yesterday been convicted of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

Sedat Meric, 25, was found guilty at Old Bailey along with his accomplice, 22-year-old Oktay Ayanoglu, who was convicted of the same offence.

On 23 May 2014, officers from the NCA's Armed Operations Unit (AOU) were conducting surveillance in the West Green Road area of N15, London, in connection with a threat to life against a third man, 34-year-old Bulant Eren.

They witnessed Meric approach the West Green Pool Bar - in the company of Ayanoglu – hold up a gun and fire three shots into the venue. The court heard the intention was to send a warning sign to those making the threat against Eren.

The NCA officers immediately identified themselves. Meric began firing his gun in their direction, even though there were members of the public nearby, before fleeing down a residential road. One officer ran after him, ducking behind cars for safety and returning fire.
