Have your say: radical road changes
Two areas in South London could be transformed thanks to plans released recently by TfL.
The proposals under consultation would make Wandsworth and Vauxhall safer for vulnerable road users, with pedestrians and cyclists greatly benefiting from new or improved facilities. Work could begin as early as 2017.
In Wandsworth, plans include removing the gyratory and restricting some sections of the high street to buses and cyclists only, which would help reduce traffic.
Cycle Superhighway 8 would be extended to the town centre, providing a safer route for riders along Wandsworth High Street. The area would also benefit from improved pedestrian crossings.
In Vauxhall, proposals include returning the one-way system to two-way traffic and improving facilities for pedestrians and cyclists. New or upgraded cycle lanes would be segregated and signalised cycle crossings installed. The work would improve cycle links to and through the area, and connect to the recently completed Cycle Superhighway 5.
TfL's Managing Director of Surface Transport Leon Daniels said: 'Both Wandsworth and Vauxhall are set for dramatic and much needed changes, bringing a simplified, safer and more pleasant environment that supports investment in the areas. The proposals have already been well supported by the public, and now we, and the local boroughs, are asking for feedback on the finer details.'
Both projects will be part of TfL's £360m growth fund, creating jobs and homes by unlocking development across London with transport projects.
