Housing Minister welcomes continued fall in homelessness

Number of homeless people and those applying for homelessness assistance falls.

Commenting on homelessness statistics released by Scotland’s Chief Statistician yesterday, Housing Minister Margaret Burgess said:

“I welcome the continued fall in homelessness in Scotland, with the number of people applying for homelessness assistance and the number assessed as homeless falling by seven per cent and three per cent respectively in April – June 2014 compared to the same period last year. I am particularly pleased to see a 10 per cent decrease in households with children in temporary accommodation, as well as a fall in the number of children in temporary accommodation at 30 June 2014.

“The Scottish Government is committed to supporting people of all ages who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, and we have worked hard with local authorities to develop services that help prevent homelessness before it occurs and the figures released today show that we are all continuing to make progress.

“We will continue to work with our partners to prevent homelessness and improve outcomes for households experiencing difficulties.”
