Hybrid bus boost for London
The Capital now has 1,500 environmentally friendly buses on its streets thanks to TfL's investment in green hybrid technology.
The diesel-electric hybrid vehicles - including almost 600 New Routemasters - make up almost a quarter of London's bus fleet and the figure is set to rise to 1,700 next year.
Quieter, cleaner and more fuel-efficient than standard diesel buses, hybrids reduce emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) by at least 30% compared with conventional buses.
The buses also have regenerative braking, which means they generate electrical energy when the brakes are pressed. This would otherwise be lost as heat. By using this energy the buses consume less fuel and so produce less CO2.
Having 1,700 hybrid vehicles in service by 2016, compared with standard diesel buses, will reduce CO2emissions in the Capital by around 98,000 tonnes a year.
London's green buses
- The Capital has the largest hybrid bus fleet in Europe
- A fleet of eight hydrogen fuel buses run on route RV1 between Covent Garden and Tower Gateway emit nothing but water into the air
- London's electric bus fleet is also growing, from around 10 buses now to more than 300 by 2020
