ICO prosecutes man who tried to steal customer data

A former employee of LV= was prosecuted by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) at Bournemouth Magistrates’ Court for attempting to obtain personal data.

David Barlow Lewis pleaded guilty to trying to get an existing LV= employee to sell him customer data and was fined £300, ordered to pay £614.40 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.  

An ICO spokesperson said:

“Stealing personal information is a crime. Lewis may have failed in his attempt to buy personal data but his intention was clear. Anyone who tries to unlawfully obtain, disclose or sell personal data should expect to see themselves hauled before the courts.”

The prosecution follows calls by the Information Commissioner for tougher sentences for data thieves.
