ICO welcomes action by Wolverhampton City Council to keep residents details secure

– As free support offered to businesses in the West Midlands

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has today confirmed that Wolverhampton City Council has met the requirements of an enforcement notice served on the authority on 15 May 2014 following a breach of the Data Protection Act.

The original order from the ICO required the council to provide data protection training to its entire staff.

Information Commissioner, Christopher Graham, said:

“We are pleased that Wolverhampton City Council have now provided adequate data protection training to all of their staff. It is important that the council maintains these practices going forward to make sure residents’ information is handled correctly and kept secure.

“People are increasingly aware of the value of their information and the need to keep it secure. This is why it’s important that organisations across both the public and private sectors make sure their practices are up to scratch. We are holding a free workshop for small and medium sized enterprises across the West Midlands in September to help organisations who may have a limited understanding of their responsibilities under the Data Protection Act to get it right.”

The ICO workshop is being held in Birmingham on 25 September 2014. The workshop is one of a series being held by the ICO across the UK aimed at people from the Small and Medium Sized Enterprise sector who may have a limited understanding of their organisation’s requirements under the Data Protection Act. Those interested in in applying to attend the Birmingham workshop can find further details at ico.org.uk/dpworkshops.
