IPCC appeals for witnesses to assist its investigation into the death of Robert Grimsley in Rugby

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is appealing for witnesses to assist its investigation into the death of a man in Rugby.

Robert Grimsley, 34, from Rugby, was pronounced dead at Walsgrave Hospital at 8.17pm on Sunday 20 July 2014. Earlier in the evening he had become unwell during his detention by officers from Warwickshire Police in the Pennington Mews area of the town.

IPCC Commissioner Derrick Campbell said:

"Our investigation team has met with Robert’s family who are understandably very upset about his death. It is our role to establish what happened on that night, and provide answers to any questions they may have.

"We want to speak to anyone who may have seen Robert from around 6pm onwards on Sunday 20 July in Rugby town centre or the Pennington Mews area.

"Did you see Robert or his contact with police? If so, please contact us. Any piece of information, no matter how small, might assist our investigation.”

Mr Grimsley is described as being 6’ 1” tall, of medium build, with short brown hair and a goatee beard. He was wearing union jack shorts, and had no top on with visible tattoos on his chest and arms.

Witnesses can contact the IPCC investigation team on 0800 092 2434 or rugbyincident@ipcc.gsi.gov.uk

Initial accounts have been provided by officers who had contact with Mr Grimsley, and local authority CCTV footage has been secured and is being analysed.

A post mortem has been conducted, and the results of further tests are awaited
