IPCC appeals for witnesses to fatal RTI in Leeds

The Independent Police Complaints Commission is appealing for witnesses to assist an investigation into a fatal road traffic incident in the Harehills area of Leeds.

‪‪Tesfa Hughes, 26, died after the VW Golf he was driving was in collision with a car being driven by a member of the public on Roundhay Road at around 7.05pm on Wednesday 20 May. The member of the public sustained a number of serious injuries and is receiving treatment in hospital.

‪Shortly before the collision a West Yorkshire Police car had begun to pursue the VW Golf.

‪‪The incident was referred to the IPCC and investigators were deployed to undertake an assessment. As a result of the assessment an independent investigation has now begun.

‪‪The IPCC is appealing for anyone who witnessed any part of the incident to contact them by telephone on 0800 0920340 or via email at harehills@ipcc.gsi.gov.uk ‪

‪IPCC Commissioner Kathryn Stone OBE said: “My sympathies go out to the family and friends of Tesfa Hughes at this difficult time. The IPCC will conduct an independent investigation to examine all the circumstances of the incident. We want to examine as much evidence as possible and I would urge anyone with any information to contact us.”
