IPCC appeals for witnesses to incident on St Leonards Road, Northampton

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is appealing for witnesses to two incidents at a shop on St Leonards Road, Northampton on Thursday 25 September.

Investigators want to speak to anyone who may have been in or around the ‘Booze ‘N’ Stuff’ shop between 5.15pm and 6.40pm, and 10.15pm and 10.45pm and who may have witnessed contact between a 53-year-old white man and Northamptonshire police officers and members of the public.

During the second period of contact, the man was arrested and taken to custody at Northamptonshire Police’s Criminal Justice Centre. In the early hours of Friday 26 September, he was found to be unwell in his cell and was taken to Northampton General Hospital. He was later transferred to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford where he remains in a critical but stable condition. His next of kin have been notified.

IPCC investigators will be in the St Leonards Road area this afternoon carrying out house to house enquiries. Anyone with information can contact the IPCC on 0800 015 4876.

The IPCC received a referral from Northamptonshire Police on Friday 26 September and began an independent investigation.
