IPCC begins independent investigation after Derbyshire death in custody

The IPCC has begun an investigation after a man died in custody at Buxton Police Station in Derbyshire on Thursday 24 November.

The man, who was white and in his 50s, was arrested on Wednesday 23 November, at 1.30pm in the Peak District and taken to the custody unit at Buxton Police Station.

He was found to be unresponsive in his cell during a routine check at 2am on Thursday. Medical assistance was provided and an ambulance attended but the man was pronounced dead by a paramedic at 2.40am.

Derbyshire Constabulary informed the IPCC of the death shortly afterwards and an independent investigation was declared at 4.20am.

IPCC investigators went to the scene and the police post incident procedure. CCTV footage and other evidence has been gathered at the custody unit and initial accounts have been provided by police officers and staff.

The man’s next of kin have been informed and a post mortem examination will take place in due course.

IPCC Commissioner Derrick Campbell said: “Our sympathies are with the man’s family and anyone else affected by his death. Our inquiries are obviously at a very early stage and we will be carrying out a very thorough investigation of all the circumstances.”
