The IPCC is independently investigating contact between Kent Police and a woman prior to her death.

Lora Snelgrove, 25, was pronounced dead at Medway Maritime Hospital on Tuesday 26 August 2014.

She had been arrested and taken into custody at Medway police station at 10.35am on Friday 22 August. During her detention she became unwell, and staff were advised by the custody nurse that she should be taken to A&E. She was transferred to Medway Maritime Hospital at 1pm.

The IPCC is investigating the circumstances of the arrest, transportation and detention of Ms Snelgrove up to the time that medical staff took over her care. The investigation is considering the care provided to Ms Snelgrove while she was in the custody of the police including any risk assessments that were in place.

IPCC Commissioner Mary Cunneen said:

"Ms Snelgrove's family are obviously very upset by her death, and I have offered my condolences to them. Our investigators have made contact with them to explain our role and outline the parameters of our investigation."

A post mortem was inconclusive and the results of further tests are awaited.
