IPCC investigating Dyfed Powys Police contact with man prior to his death in Llanelli

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is investigating police contact prior to the death of a 43-year-old man recently (Tuesday) evening in Llanelli.

Police were called to Maes Y Bwlch, Llanelli, at around 7.30pm following several calls from members of the public reporting a disturbance. Police arrived to find a man in the street in a distressed state. During the incident a Taser was discharged. The man became unresponsive and an ambulance was called, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Dyfed Powys Police notified the IPCC, and IPCC investigators were sent to the scene and police post incident procedures. Following an assessment, the IPCC has begun an independent investigation into police interaction with the man prior to his death, including use of Taser.

Investigators have contacted the man’s family to advise them of our involvement. Formal identification is yet to take place and a post mortem is expected to be carried out tomorrow. IPCC investigators have begun viewing relevant CCTV footage, and gaining initial accounts from officers involved.

Dyfed Powys Police is carrying out a parallel criminal investigation into injuries believed to be sustained by the man prior to officers arriving.

IPCC Commissioner for Wales, Jan Williams, said: “This was a traumatic event for all involved and I send my sympathies to the man’s family and friends at this difficult time. We have begun a thorough investigation into the police interaction with the man, which will run alongside Dyfed Powys Police’s criminal inquiry into how the man sustained earlier injuries.”
