Investigators from the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) were in Hull yesterday (Tuesday 29 November)where they began an investigation into an incident in the city centre during which a man was shot and injured by armed police.

Initial information indicates that armed police officers were deployed to the Holderness Road area of the city centre just after 9am this morning, in response to calls from members of the public reporting a man carrying an axe.

At this stage, the IPCC understands that officers fired more than one shot at the man, at around 9.35am, on Francis Street. During the incident Taser was also discharged by police.

A 31-year-old white man, from the local area, was taken to hospital by ambulance where his condition is described as critical. His family has been informed.

After being notified by Humberside Police this morning, IPCC investigators attended the scene to oversee forensic examinations. Investigators were also deployed to oversee the police post-incident procedures where they received initial accounts from officers and some witnesses have already been identified.

IPCC Associate Commissioner Tom Milsom said:

“We have an independent investigation under way into this serious incident and will be examining the full circumstances. We would be grateful if anyone who witnessed the events in Hull city centre would contact us.”

The 31-year-old shot man by Humberside Police yesterday morning (Tuesday 29 November) has sadly died.

IPCC Associate Commissioner Tom Milsom said:

“Our thoughts are with the man’s friends and family, and all those affected at this very difficult time.”
