IPCC investigating Humberside Police’s response to calls about the welfare of a man who died

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is investigating Humberside Police’s response to calls about the welfare of a man who died.

Michael Leddington-Lucas, 66, was found dead at his home in Beverley, East Yorkshire by police on 24 September 2014.

Humberside Police received calls on 23 and 24 September 2014 expressing concern for the welfare of Mr Leddington-Lucas. Following the second call on 24 September, police officers were dispatched to Mr Leddington-Lucas’ home where they gained entry and found him dead.

The IPCC is independently investigating whether the initial call to Humberside Police was handled in line with the force’s policies and national guidelines, looking specifically at the actions and decision-making of the call handler.

A misconduct notice has been served on the call handler advising that her conduct is subject to investigation.

Commissioner Kathryn Stone OBE said: “My thoughts are with those closest to Mr Leddington-Lucas following his sad death. This investigation will seek to determine whether the correct policies and procedures were followed when Humberside Police was first contacted and if the information gathered from the call should have been used to instigate welfare checks on Mr Leddington-Lucas.”
