IPCC investigating Torquay death in custody

The IPCC has begun an independent investigation following the death of a 35-year-old man in Devon & Cornwall Police custody.

Initial indications are that officers at Torquay custody suite noticed the man was unwell in his cell in the early hours of 14 September 2016. An ambulance was called and the man was taken to Torbay Hospital, but he sadly died.

After being notified by the force, the IPCC determined that an independent investigation should be carried out. Investigators are at Torquay Police Station today examining the scene and gathering relevant information.

The man is yet to be formally identified. A post mortem will take place in the coming days.
