IPCC investigating West Midlands Police response to report man was missing prior to body being found

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is investigating the police response to a report a man was missing prior to his body being found in an annex in Birmingham in May.

The body of Zafran Nawaz was discovered at a property in Carlton Road, Bordesley Green on 22 May. A family member contacted West Midlands Police on 20 May expressing concern for Zafran’s welfare, and reported him as missing the following day.

The IPCC is looking at the actions and decisions West Midlands Police took in the days leading up to Mr Nawaz’s body being found and what steps were taken to attempt to locate him. IPCC investigators have met with Mr Nawaz’s family to explain how the investigation will progress.

The IPCC independent investigation follows a referral from West Midlands Police.  A man has been charged with the murder of Mr Nawaz and has appeared at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court.
