IPCC investigating detention of man found dead 24 hours after release

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is investigating the custody of a man who was found dead at home less than 24 hours after being released by Devon and Cornwall Police.

Logan Peters, 22, was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage in Plymouth on 7 May and taken to the Charles Cross custody centre.

After being charged and released he was found dead at his home address in Cornwall the following day.

Mr Peters's death was referred to the IPCC on 8 May and, following an assessment, an independent investigation was launched. The investigation will also consider a complaint from Mr Peter’s family that excessive force was used during the arrest.

An IPCC investigator collected CCTV footage and custody records from Devon and Cornwall police. Tom Milsom, the IPCC Commissioner who will oversee the investigation, is due to meet members of Mr Peter’s family later this month.

Mr Milsom said: “I would like to extend my sympathies to the family of Logan for their loss. I would like to assure them that we will look at the force used at arrest and all of the actions and decisions taken in relation to the risk assessments during Logan’s time in custody.

“Additionally, we will look at the communication processes between the custody staff, and the period of detention to determine whether all national and force policies and guidelines were adhered to.”
