IPCC investigating how WMP handled abuse allegation at Birmingham care home

The IPCC is investigating the way West Midlands Police (WMP) dealt with allegations of elder abuse at the Ridings Nursing Home in Castle Vale, Birmingham in February 2015.

The allegations resulted in an offender receiving a caution for common assault.

The IPCC will examine whether the force appropriately engaged with the victim’s family before the caution was issued and whether the decision to caution was made in accordance with relevant legislation, guidance and local and national policy. The matter was referred to the IPCC by West Midlands Police on 29 September.

The investigation is in its early stages and at this stage, no individual officer has been served with a notice of misconduct.
