IPCC investigation after man’s death at Johnstown

The IPCC is investigating police contact with a man prior to his death in the Johnstown area of Wrexham earlier on yesterday (Sunday, 12 February).

The IPCC understands that North Wales Police were called to an address in Ruabon Road at around 10.20am over concerns for the welfare of a man there.

IPCC investigators were told that during the incident that followed a man in his 30s sustained self-inflicted knife injuries and was taken to hospital where he subsequently died. His relatives have been informed.

It is also understood that a police officer was taken to hospital with injuries although these were not thought to be serious.

After receiving notification from North Wales Police, IPCC investigators were deployed and an independent investigation was declared.

IPCC Commissioner Jan Williams said: “Our thoughts are with the family of the man who died following this tragic incident. We are in the initial stages of carrying out an investigation into the circumstances and the police interaction with the man. We have met with his relatives to explain our role and we will keep them updated throughout our inquiries.”
