The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is investigating the actions of Merseyside Police prior to the discovery of a man's body in Liverpool.

Toby Saunders, 37, was found dead at his home address on Aigburth Vale on 6 May 2016.

The IPCC independent investigation will look at the actions taken by police, in response to a call to them concerning Mr Saunders' welfare, on the afternoon of 5 May 2016.

The IPCC received a referral, from Merseyside Police, on 9 May and the investigation began soon after.

IPCC Commissioner Carl Gumsley said: "My sympathies go to the family and friends of Mr Saunders.

"Our investigation centres on the overall response by Merseyside Police on 5 and 6 May 2016 to the concern for welfare report; including the actions and decisions taken.”
