IPCC investigation following police pursuit in Greater Manchester

The IPCC has begun an investigation following an incident in Bury, Greater Manchester, in which a woman was seriously injured.

The incident, involving a collision between a suspected stolen vehicle – a Honda Civic – and a Ford Fiesta, happened shortly after 8pm on Tuesday 31 May on Bolton Road West, Holcombe Brook. The Honda Civic was being pursued by officers from Greater Manchester Police prior to the collision.

A 36-year-old woman from the Fiesta suffered serious injuries and remains in a critical condition in hospital. Two men, aged 21 and 22, from the Honda were taken to hospital. One has since been released and another remains in a stable condition.

IPCC investigators were deployed to the scene and attended post-incident procedures.

IPCC Commissioner Jan Williams said: “This incident resulted in a woman receiving serious injuries and my thoughts are with her and her family at this time. We have decided to conduct an independent investigation.  Our investigators have already begun to gather evidence and we will look closely at the circumstances of the police pursuit prior to the collision.”
