A man who died in police custody at a Leeds police station on Monday 12 May has been named as 46 year old Adam Rice.

The IPCC is independently investigating the circumstances surrounding Mr Rice’s death following a referral from West Yorkshire Police.

He was taken to Elland Road police station, and placed in a cell in the custody suite. Mr Rice was found to be unresponsive when checked in his cell at 7am on Monday 12 May, and despite attempts to resuscitate him, he was confirmed dead around 45 minutes later.

An inquest was opened and adjourned at Wakefield Coroner’s Court on Thursday 22 May.

IPCC investigators are in contact with Mr Rice’s family and will keep them updated as the investigation continues.
