IPCC response to the speech by the Home Secretary at the Police Federation Conference
Deaths in or following police custody in England and Wales continue to fall, but the link with mental health issues remains a serious concern to the IPCC.
The IPCC has said for many years that police stations are not appropriate places to detain people who are mentally ill. J
oint working across policing and healthcare is vital to ensure those who are mentally ill receive the appropriate help, in the appropriate environment.
The Home Secretary’s announcement is a welcome move to address this issue.
