IPCC to investigate BTP for alleged racial discrimination and excessive use of force

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is investigating allegations of racial discrimination and excessive use of force against a black man during his arrest by British Transport Police (BTP).

The incident under investigation took place at St Pancras railway station at around 6.20pm on Tuesday 8 March.

IPCC Commissioner Jennifer Izekor said:

“The IPCC has received initial witness accounts and a copy of CCTV footage from inside St Pancras station. We are aware of the public interest and mobile phone footage circulating online. The IPCC received a referral from BTP on Thursday 10 March and due to the seriousness of the allegations the IPCC has taken the decision to conduct an independent investigation. Our investigation will be looking at all the circumstances around the use of force and arrest of the individual involved.”

The IPCC declared an independent investigation today (Monday 14 March), following the IPCC’s assessment of the referral made by BTP.
