IPCC to investigate Thames Valley Police’s handling of a missing person report

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is to investigate the police response to a reported missing person in Reading who is in a critical condition in hospital following a fall from a multi-storey car park.

The man, aged 54, contacted Thames Valley Police on 10 August 2014 over concerns for his welfare. Following contact with the police, he attended Royal Berkshire Hospital from where he was reported missing later that day.

At around 3 am on 12 August 2014 the man fell from the fifth storey of a car park in Reading and was taken to hospital where he remains in critical condition.

The IPCC investigation will look at the nature of his initial contact with police, how police handled the missing person inquiry and made use of whatever information was available to them.

The IPCC has made contact with the man’s family to make them aware of the IPCC’s involvement.

Thames Valley Police referred the matter to the IPCC on 12 August and after careful assessment the IPCC has decided to carry out an independent investigation.
