IPCC to investigate firearms incident in Wallington after which a man died

The IPCC is investigating events leading up to the death of a man in Wallington, Surrey on Saturday 30 January 2016.

The man has now been named as Tony Hanley, 51, from Wallington, who was a civilian employee of the Metropolitan Police (MPS).

Just before 8pm police were called to the home of Mr Hanley, following reports of a man with a gun and concerns for his welfare. Police officers did not find Mr Hanley at home but he was subsequently located on a nearby street in possession of a firearm.

Armed officers entered into a short period of negotiation with Mr Hanley, however this proved to be unsuccessful. Police officers then discharged one Taser and two baton rounds, following which Mr Hanley shot himself.

Mr Hanley was taken to St George’s Hospital, Tooting where he died in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Associate Commissioner Tom Milsom said:

“My thoughts and sympathies are with Mr Hanley’s family and friends at this difficult time. The IPCC are examining the sequence of events which followed the phone call to police, the actions of the responding police officers and any background information regarding Mr Hanley’s health which may assist in understanding his behaviour.”

IPCC investigators were deployed immediately to the scene on the same night. They have obtained statements from officers present that evening, viewed some body-worn video footage, conducted a CCTV trawl and spoken to local witnesses. Investigations are ongoing as to the source of Mr Hanley’s non-police firearm. A post-mortem was conducted on 3 February.

Mr Hanley’s family has requested the media respect their privacy at this difficult time.
