IPCC witness appeal after roadside arrest in Coventry

An appeal for witnesses has been made by the IPCC as it investigates the use of force against a member of the public during an incident in Coventry.

At about 2.10am on Sunday, 4 December 2016 West Midlands Police arrested a man driving a car which pulled up opposite shops near the Hillfields Community Centre in Victoria Street, Coventry. Following his arrest the man was taken to hospital with a knee injury. He was later released without charge.

The IPCC began an independent investigation following a referral from the force and wants to trace people who witnessed any part of the incident, in particular anyone who was driving past the scene.

IPCC Commissioner Derrick Campbell said: “We are aware from reviewing CCTV footage that there was some passing traffic and people in those vehicles may have seen something relevant to our inquiries. To help us conduct as thorough an investigation as possible we would urge anyone who saw what happened to come forward and help us.”
