IPCC witness appeal following injury to football fan

The IPCC is calling for witnesses to an incident following the League Two play-off fixture between Portsmouth and Plymouth Argyle at Fratton Park on 12 May 2016. A 30-year-old Portsmouth supporter has alleged he suffered a serious head wound after being struck on the head with a baton by a Devon & Cornwall police officer.

The man was walking with his wife on Carisbrooke Road after the match, when at around 9.40pm he became involved in an altercation with a Plymouth fan. Devon & Cornwall officers policing the match were nearby and attended the incident, and shortly after the man was allegedly struck on the head by an officer, resulting in a wound requiring medical treatment.

The IPCC has begun an independent investigation to look at the circumstances surrounding the incident, and the actions of the officers involved.

Anyone in the area at the time who may have seen or heard the incident is asked to email carisbrookeroad@ipcc.gsi.gov.uk or phone 0800 096 9071.
