Investigation into use of force during arrest of 13-year-old girl in east London

The IPCC is investigating an allegation of excessive use of force against a 13-year-old girl who was arrested by a Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) officer in east London.

The incident under investigation happened at around 4pm on 5 October 2016 outside Wapping High School in Commercial Road.

IPCC Associate Commissioner Tom Milsom said:

“This serious allegation concerns the actions of a police constable during the arrest of a teenager in Tower Hamlets. The MPS referred the matter to the IPCC after a complaint about the incident was lodged by a relative of the girl involved.

“We are aware of mobile phone footage which has been circulating online, and the public interest in the events which took place in Wapping on that day. Our investigation will look at all of the circumstances around the alleged use of force and arrest of the girl. We have been in touch with the complainant and will be seeking to speak to the girl involved as soon as possible.”

The teenager was subsequently dearrested with no further action being taken by the MPS.

Investigators will gather the existing police paperwork surrounding the incident and will be looking to speak to any witnesses to the incident including the girl and officer involved.
