Investigation launched after man dies following police contact

The IPCC has launched an investigation after a man died following police contact in South East London.

The man was in contact with Metropolitan Police officers shortly before 1.00am Thursday, 23 February, on Welling High Street, Welling. While with police the man became unwell and an ambulance was called. He was then taken to hospital but was declared dead a short time later.

A mandatory referral was made to the IPCC and following an assessment, the decision has been taken to launch an independentinvestigation.

IPCC Associate Commissioner Tom Milsom said: “This is a tragic event where a man has lost his life. We are appealing for any witnesses to the incident to come forward to assist with our investigation.”
