Investing in care for the elderly

£20 million earmarked for new Dundee care centre.

Funding to support the build of a new community care centre, which will care for the elderly in the Dundee area, has been secured.

The £20 million investment is part of a larger £409 million health infrastructure package, which will roll out across Scotland and now extends through to 2019-20.

The new centre in Dundee will follow on from recently improved services in the area, including the Kingsway Care Centre which opened in 2013, providing 62 in-patient beds and a day clinic for 15 patients.

The funding has also been made available to enhance the in-patient facilities at Carseview Mental Health Centre in Dundee as part of an overall programme of improvement in mental health services.

Other developments in the area include new facilities for the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services, currently under construction in Dundee and due for completion in March 2015.

Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said:

"This project will support the provision of state-of-the-art facilities to care for patients across the Dundee area and adds to the recent programme of significantly improving care services in the city.

“The £20 million investment committed by the Scottish Government is part of a £409 million investment across Scotland to deliver the highest quality of health and social care services. This government’s vision is to deliver world-leading safe, effective and person-centred healthcare.

“Despite the massive cuts to Scotland’s capital budget from Westminster, the Scottish Government will continue to deliver substantial investment in the infrastructure of the NHS through use of the innovative NPD model and the Hub programme.”

NHS Tayside Director of Community Services Bill Nicoll said:

"We are delighted to see this level of investment for Dundee health services.

"This £20m funding will ensure that we can deliver high-quality care in environments which are fit to deliver modern day healthcare for our communities in Dundee."

NHS Tayside will now embark on a programme of engagement with patients, families, carers, staff and communities to ensure plans for the new centre offer patients the best possible care environments and improved models of care. This will include an options appraisal on the models of care and the location of the centre.

The NPD model has been developed by the Scottish Futures Trust (SFT) which has been set up by the Scottish Government to support infrastructure investment in Scotland.
