Iraq: UK government response

Updates on the UK government response to the situation in Iraq.

The situation in Northern Iraq remains deeply worrying and we condemn the barbaric attacks waged by ISIL (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) terrorists across the region. Hundreds of thousands of people are displaced across the region and in need of aid supplies.

The UK government response is focused on 3 objectives:

  • alleviating the humanitarian suffering of those Iraqis targeted by ISILterrorists
  • promoting an inclusive, sovereign and democratic Iraq that can push back on ISIL advances and restore stability and security across the country
  • working with the international community to tackle the broader threat thatISIL poses to the region and other countries around the world

The Prime Minister chaired a COBR meeting today (13 August). Read more government updates and statements.

UK aid in Northern Iraq

Our focus remains the humanitarian situation, particularly those trapped on Mount Sinjar. Seven UK aid drops have now taken place. As part of the £13 million aid we have committed to Iraq, we will continue these deliveries in the coming week. Britain is also supporting 12,000 Yazidi refugees who have escaped from Mount Sinjar and made it to a refugee camp across the Syrian border

Tornados ready to support humanitarian operations

We are pre-positioning a small number of Tornados in the region so that they could, if required, use their surveillance capability to gather better situational awareness to help with humanitarian effort.

United Nations Security Council

The UK is also continuing to lead efforts at the United Nations Security Council for a strong international response to the broader threat posed byISIL terrorists.

We have proposed a UNSC resolution to:

  • disrupt ISIL’s financing flows
  • sanction those who are seeking to recruit to ISIL
  • encourage countries to do all they can to prevent foreign fighters joiningISIL

We will press for substantive negotiations on this resolution this week.
