JRF - Northern Powerhouse: We need a post-Brexit settlement for northern towns that have been left behind

Julia Unwin, chief executive of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF), responded to IPPR North’s State of the North report

“This report is a powerful reminder that swathes of the country have not shared in the country’s growth and prosperity, leaving them vulnerable to economic shocks. While many northern cities have been a success story over the past decade, their revival has not spread beyond many city centres. That has to change.

“We need a post-Brexit settlement for northern towns that have been left behind. The Northern Powerhouse is a welcome attempt to rebalance the economy, but this needs to work for all of the north.

“Devolution is breathing new life into city leadership: mayors must now use the powers and budget at their disposal to shape a better economy – one that generates inclusive growth, where all people and places share the proceeds.”
