The Northern Ireland Assembly Justice Committee yesterday hosted an event to discuss a recent report into the efficiency in criminal proceedings in England and Wales. The author of the report, the Rt Hon Sir Brian Leveson, President of the Queen's Bench spoke to members of the Committee and invited guests about the report's findings and the lessons that Northern Ireland can learn from it.

Chairperson of the Committee, Alastair Ross MLA said: "We are very privileged to host Sir Brian who, besides authoring this report, brings a wealth of experience to this area.

"All of us are dealing with a difficult financial situation and this is unlikely to be alleviated in the near future. At the same time, we must ensure that the criminal justice system delivers for victims and helps us to use all available resources to their best advantage.

"While Northern Ireland has many differences to the situation obtaining in England and Wales, there are still lessons we can learn from Sir Brian's report and it is imperative that we learn these.

"This event will provide an opportunity for key representatives from the justice system to learn more about Sir Brian's proposals for change and discuss how these could be developed and adapted to improve the criminal justice system in Northern Ireland I am particularly pleased that the Lord Chief Justice and a number of other members of the judiciary will be attending the event.

"Over the past few months my Committee has hosted a number of innovation seminars on different aspects of the justice system and we have found this a valuable exercise. Sharing knowledge and experience is one way to ensure that we develop the best and most efficient means of delivering the criminal justice system in Northern Ireland."
