KIDS CHOOSE 10 KEY MOMENTS IN HISTORY

  • The Battle of Hastings, V-E Day and the invention of the World Wide Web were all chosen as key moments in history.
  • Best-selling children's author and illustrator Liz Pichon will bring the top moments to life through a 21st Century Bayeux Tapestry and nationwide competition.

As a part of the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings and the Norman conquest of England, we asked 1,000 children to name the most important moments in English history. While some answers cover iconic moments such as the end of the Second World War and the sealing of Magna Carta, the children also picked some more unexpected events such as the arrival of the Black Death and the invention of the internet.

Children's author and illustrator Liz Pichon will use these moments to create a 21st century version of the Bayeux Tapestry which will be revealed this summer. Children will have the chance to submit their own illustrations to complete the tenth and final panel.

Liz Pichon said: "It's great to see children so clued up on history. Their choices are inspiring and I can't wait to start drawing and bringing these moments to life. English Heritage's Summer of 1066 promises to be fantastic fun and I'm delighted to be part of it."
